- Temporary Medical Conditions
Students who are experiencing a temporary medical condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities may be eligible for short-term academic adjustments through Student Accessibility Services (SAS). Temporary services are typically approved for up to one academic term at a time.
Examples of temporary medical conditions may include, but are not limited to:
- Physical injuries such as broken bones or torn ligaments
- Short-term impairments related to surgery, illness, or accidents
- Pregnancy, childbirth, false pregnancy, termination of pregnancy, lactation, and related medical conditions
Title IX Notice – Pregnancy and Related Conditions
Under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Georgia Piedmont Technical College does not discriminate on the basis of sex, including pregnancy and related conditions. Students who are pregnant or experiencing pregnancy-related medical conditions are entitled to reasonable academic adjustments, excused absences related to medical needs, and the ability to return to the same academic status held prior to a leave.
Pregnancy-related academic adjustments do not require a disability determination and may be coordinated through the Student Title IX Coordinator, in collaboration with Student Accessibility Services when appropriate.
Students may contact the Student Title IX Coordinator at accessibility@gptc.edu to discuss pregnancy-related supports and options.
Duration of Services
Students requesting temporary services through Student Accessibility Services will work with a SAS staff member to determine appropriate academic adjustments based on an individualized assessment of the condition’s severity, functional impact, and expected duration.
If a temporary condition continues beyond one academic term or becomes long-term or permanent, students should contact Student Accessibility Services to discuss ongoing accommodation eligibility.
Registration Process
To request temporary academic adjustments through Student Accessibility Services, students must complete the SAS Application for Services and submit supporting documentation. Documentation must include:
- A clear diagnosis
- A description of functional limitations in an academic setting
- The expected duration of the condition
Temporary Medical Condition Form
Students requesting short-term academic adjustments for a temporary medical condition may be asked to complete a Temporary Medical Condition Form. This form allows the student and, when applicable, a healthcare provider to document the nature of the temporary condition, how it impacts academic functioning, and the anticipated duration of limitations.
The Temporary Medical Condition Form is available here:
Students seeking pregnancy-related academic adjustments under Title IX may not be required to complete this form and may instead coordinate directly with the Student Title IX Coordinator.
Important Notice
Academic adjustments approved through Student Accessibility Services, including those for temporary medical conditions, are not retroactive. Services become effective only after the registration process is complete and the student’s Letter of Accommodation has been issued and shared with instructors.
