Note-Taking Accommodations

Note-taking accommodations are commonly approved to support equitable access for students with a range of disabilities, including learning disabilities, ADHD, Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students, and individuals with fine motor or processing limitations. These accommodations are designed to support access to course content and are not intended to replace class attendance or active participation.

Genio (formerly Glean) for Note-Taking

What is Genio?
Genio (formerly Glean) is the College’s default note-taking accommodation. This AI-supported tool helps students become more effective and independent note takers by allowing them to audio-record lectures, generate transcription support, and organize key points in real time. Genio is designed to enhance comprehension, reinforce learning, and support students in actively engaging with course material during class.

Recording Lectures

All students approved to use Genio are required to sign a Recording Agreement, which outlines both student rights and responsibilities related to recording classroom instruction. This agreement helps protect faculty members’ copyright and intellectual property while ensuring appropriate access under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for eligible students.

Please note that some instructors may choose to opt out of Genio and may not permit audio recording in their courses. In addition, there may be circumstances in which Genio is not an effective tool, such as courses that are not taught in English, math- or formula-intensive courses, or classes in which the instructor has a rapid speech pattern or strong accent.

If a student determines that Genio is not working effectively for a particular course, the student should contact their assigned Access Coordinator or Disability Services Coordinator to explore alternative solutions. These may include obtaining instructor-provided notes, peer notes, or receiving guidance on strategies to use Genio more effectively.
