For Mackenzie Calhoun, teaching at Georgia Piedmont Technical College means more than just following lesson plans or meeting learning goals. It is about hope—for her students and for herself.

After working in the corporate world, Calhoun returned to education with a master’s degree in English and a strong belief in the power of technical education to change lives. At GPTC, she found that education is part of a bigger journey. “It’s exhilarating to witness students at graduation,” she said. “My class represents just a dot along their path, but it matters.”

Calhoun puts students at the center of her teaching. She values working together, asking questions, and building connections, and she takes time to get to know her students beyond the classroom. Many of them juggle work, family, and other challenges, and she respects their determination. When students need help, she connects them with resources and treats them with empathy and respect.

“Life is challenging,” she said. “Our students are navigating so much, and it’s admirable that they remain passionate and persistent.”

In her classroom, Calhoun helps students build confidence by encouraging reflection and self-discovery. They use inspirational quotes, free-writing, and activities that help them trust their own voices. “The more a person practices, the better they become,” she said. “I want students to remember their why, especially when things get hard.”

A special moment for Calhoun happened in Spring 2025, when she taught Monique Turner in her English class. Calhoun nominated Turner for the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership and was proud to see her win the GOAL award in January 2026. “Seeing her win was incredible,” Calhoun said. “I am so proud.”

Another meaningful experience for Calhoun was teaching the son of her own ninth-grade English teacher. She said this reminded her of how education connects generations and leaves lasting impressions in ways we might not expect.

Being recognized with the Rick Perkins Award is an honor she holds with humility. “It is a privilege to receive this recognition within technical education,” she said. “I am in the company of so many fantastic faculty and staff, and I intend to continue striving for excellence.”

Looking ahead, Calhoun hopes her students remain the strongest testament to GPTC’s impact. “I hope our students will be the visible illustration of the programs offered here,” she said. “And most of all, that they continue to be proud graduates of our college.”
