If you are requesting benefits under the Veterans Administration you must obtain the following information:

• If you are applying for veterans benefits for the first time you must complete form 22-1990 and submit a copy of your DD-214. Upon completion of the appropriate form(s) your information will be submitted to VA. Please submit your information prior to the start of the quarter or you may encounter a delay of your allotments. The certification process may take approximately 30 to 90 days.

• If you are applying for benefits as a reservist, you must complete form 22-1990 and submit a copy of your DD-2384 (NOBE); your commanding officer will have access to this form.

• If you are applying for benefits as an eligible dependent or spouse you must complete form 22-5490. You must know the eligible veteran's VA file number.

• All veterans, spouses, and dependents must complete a Data Sheet, this form is available in room A-214 Veteran Affairs/ Financial Aid office.

• If you have previously applied for educational benefits at any other institution, you must submit a copy of your VA form 22-0557 (Certificate of Eligibility) along with a change of program or place of training form 22-5495 (dependent/spouse) or form 22-1995 (MGI BILL).

• Once you have received certification for your classes, MGIB recipients may certify their enrollment using WAVE at www.gibill.va.gov, if this is your first time logging into WAVE you must set up your password. Your initial password will be the last six digits of your social security number.

• It is your responsibility to notify us of any withdrawal, change of programs or call to active duty. Failure to do so will result in an overpayment in which you will be responsible for and/or you not receiving certification. It is in your best interest to submit a statement of mitigating circumstances when you withdraw.

• You must adhere to your program of study sheet. If you take classes outside of your program of study (whether or not they are to obtain your degree) you will not receive certification. If your advisor will allow you to take a class in lieu of another class you must submit written notification from your advisor to room A-214 stating that the class you are enrolled in can be substituted for another class required for the program. The statement must address the fact that this course will count toward graduation in your specified program of study.

• We will not submit certification for classes that you have passed, audit classes, or classes that you have received transfer credits.

• The Department of Veteran Affairs has regulations regarding satisfactory academic progress and course enrollments. Read the school's policy concerning academic probation/suspension. VA follows the same policy.

Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty (MGIB-AD)

The MGIB program provides up to 36 months of education benefits. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances. Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from active duty. This program is also commonly known as Chapter 30.

Accelerated Payment for MGIB-AD

An accelerated payment is a lump sum payment of 60% of tuition and fees for certain high cost, high tech programs. To qualify, you must be enrolled in a high tech program and you must certify that you intend to seek employment in a high tech industry as defined by VA. Accelerated payment is paid instead of Montgomery GI Bill benefits that you would otherwise receive.

Licensing and Certification

These tests must be specifically approved for the G.I. Bill. VA can pay only for the cost of the tests and not other fees connected with obtaining a license or certification.

Tuition Assistance "Top-Up "

On October 30, 2000 , the President signed into law an amendment to the Montgomery GI Bill - Active Duty education program that permits VA to pay a Tuition Assistance Top- up benefit. The amount of the benefit can be equal to the difference between the total cost of a college course and the amount of Tuition Assistance that is paid by the military for the course.

Entrepreneurship Training

Montgomery GI Bill - Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)

The MGIB-SR program may be available to you if you are a member of the Selected Reserve. The Selected Reserve includes the Army Reserve, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Marine Corps Reserve and Coast Guard Reserve, and the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

Veterans Educational Assistance Program (VEAP)

VEAP is available if you first entered active duty between January 1, 1977 and June 30, 1985 and you elected to make contributions from your military pay to participate in this education benefit program. Your contributions are matched on a $2 for $1 basis by the Government. This benefit may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training and correspondence courses. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

Survivors' and Dependents' Educational Assistance Program (DEA)

DEA provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition.. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits. These benefits may be used for degree and certificate programs, apprenticeship, and on-the-job training. If you are a spouse, you may take a correspondence course. Remedial, deficiency, and refresher courses may be approved under certain circumstances.

Work-Study Program

This program is available to any student receiving VA education benefits who is attending school three-quarter time or more. An individual working under this program may work at the school veterans' office, VA Regional Office, VA Medical Facilities, or at approved State employment offices. Tutorial Assistance Program

National Call to Service

This National Call to Service Incentive program requires a participant to perform a period of national service to be eligible for benefits. It is a Department of Defense program that is administered by VA.
