Dr. Jabari Simama
Dr. Jabari Simama was appointed as Georgia Piedmont Technical College’s president on September 1, 2012. He is the third president of the College to preside during its 54 years.
Under Dr. Simama’s leadership, the College established the Design and Media Production Technology and the Recording Arts Technology programs to support the fast-growing metro-Atlanta film and entertainment industries. Georgia Piedmont also launched the only accredited transit training program in Georgia, and the nationally accredited Law Enforcement Academy, which is the first academy of its kind in the State of Georgia to receive accreditation from The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA).
Student performance and achievement have benefitted from Dr. Simama’s focus on creating a student-centered environment at Georgia Piedmont. Since his arrival at the College, Dr. Simama launched the Sankofa Scholars Program, to identify, recruit and provide support to students from disadvantaged socio- economic backgrounds in an effort to increase their chances of graduation. In 2015, for the first time ever, statewide winners of both the Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education (EAGLE) Award and the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL) Student of the Year came from the same college—Georgia Piedmont Technical College. In addition, Dr. Simama’s stewardship has yielded more than a 60 percent graduation rate.
Dr. Simama’s impact can also be seen through his thought leadership at the annual Southern K-14 Education Innovation Summit, which he co-founded. This unique conference periodically convenes national educational leaders to address challenges that exist within the U.S. education system.
One of Dr. Simama’s signature programs is the Georgia Piedmont Advantage, which is targeted to the unemployed, under- employed and those seeking a new career. This educational and workforce development initiative provides credentials in one of seven high-demand, high-salary fields in two years or less wi th little to no out-of-pocket expense for eligible students.
Dr. Simama draws from deep experience in education, public service and media to lead Georgia Piedmont. Having gained more than 20 years’ experience in higher education at both two- and four-year institutions, Dr. Simama also served as a top executive administrator in local government. In addition, he was twice-elected as a member of the Atlanta City Council.
Dr. Simama earned his Ph.D from Emory University, his Master’s from Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University), and his Bachelor’s from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. He authored the highly acclaimed book: Civil Rights to Cyber Rights (2009).
Dr. Simama sits on the national Commission on College Readiness for the American Association of Community Colleges. He is also a member of the Presidents’ Roundtable, an affiliate org anization of the National Council on Black American Affairs.
He also serves on numerous boards throughout the region, including the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, and the Urban League of Greater Atlanta. In October of 2015, Dr . Simama was the recipient of two prestigious awards. The DeKalb Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored P eople (NAACP) honored Dr. Simama with the Narvie J. Harris Education Award in recognition of his exceptional leadership abilities. Dr. Simama also received a Pacesetter Award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR). The Pacesetter Award recognizes a president at a two-year institution, or technical college, who has demonstrated outstanding support in the area of college communications and marketing.
Dr. Simama and his wife, Nisha, are the parents of two adult daughters.
