GPTC Paralegal Graduate Receives Access4Achievement Scholarship to attend Clark Atlanta University

DeKalb County - June 29, 2017

Patricia McFadden, a 2017 graduate of Georgia Piedmont Technical College, recently received a full scholarship to attend Clark Atlanta University in the fall.  McFadden plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

“I am so proud of Patricia McFadden not only for completing the paralegal program here at Georgia Piedmont, but also for receiving an Access4Achievement scholarship from Clark Atlanta University,” said Dr. Jabari Simama, president of Georgia Piedmont.  “Interestingly, Patricia is the administrative assistant to Georgia Piedmont’s vice president of business and financial services.  She worked full-time while pursuing her associate degree in paralegal studies, so not only is she a graduate, but she’s also an employee.  I admire her commitment to earning her credential while juggling work and family responsibilities,” he said.

McFadden received the Access4Achievement scholarship, which is a component of the historic partnership program of the same name that was forged through a collaboration between Georgia Piedmont Technical College and Clark Atlanta University.  In February of this year, plans for implementing Access4Achievement were revealed during a news conference held at the Robert W. Woodruff Library Exhibition Hall at Clark Atlanta University.  The purpose of the partnership program is to expand postsecondary educational opportunities; to strengthen academic rigor; and to increase student success.

“To have earned my associate degree at the same institution where I am employed is so meaningful to me,” McFadden said.  “My instructors in the paralegal program were top-notch, and I would recommend Georgia Piedmont’s paralegal studies program to anyone who is considering a career as a legal assistant.  Moreover, I’m excited about receiving a full scholarship to Clark Atlanta University, where I plan to major in criminal justice,” she said.  “Although my mother died in 2013, I’m sure she would be happy to know I kept my promise to her to earn a college degree,” McFadden concluded.

When she completes her studies at Clark Atlanta, McFadden hopes to form her own non-profit organization that will focus on advising young men about their legal rights as parents, with an emphasis on challenges related to visitation and child support payments.
