GPTC President Speaks to Rotary Club of Covington

DeKalb County - July 28, 2016

Dr. Jabari Simama, president of Georgia Piedmont Technical College, was the featured guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Covington’s noon meeting on July 19, 2016.

“I ask you to join me in spreading the good word about all the great programs Georgia Piedmont Technical College offers to Newton County’s citizens and stakeholders,” Dr. Simama implored.  “Georgia Piedmont has been, and continues to be, a catalyst for economic development within the county and the region.  Our institution’s focus is aligned with the workforce needs of this community,” he continued.

During his speech, Dr. Simama highlighted programs and initiatives such as Adult Education, Move on When Ready (also known as “dual enrollment” for high school students), the Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant, and Georgia Piedmont’s CALEA-accredited Law Enforcement Academy, among others.

Dr. Simama placed particular emphasis on the Move On When Ready initiative, which enables high school students to enroll in college courses while they are still in high school.  Through that initiative, students receive both high school and college credits for the courses they complete, thereby reducing the overall cost of a college education.  He also explained the Strategic Industries Workforce Development Grant, which offers financial assistance to individuals interested in pursuing credit courses in one of 12 programs of study that the Technical College System of Georgia has identified as being high-demand career fields.

In terms of civic involvement, Dr. Simama mentioned Georgia Piedmont’s community policing conference that was held in January at the Law Enforcement Academy.  The purpose of the conference was to assist law enforcement officers in their interactions with the public by establishing, improving and sustaining positive relationships.  “In light of all that is happening right now in our nation, I believe we need to work together as a community of concerned citizens,” he said.

Dr. Simama indicated a similar forum will be held at the Law Enforcement Academy this fall.
