Scholarships


The Georgia Piedmont Technical College Foundation offers a number of scholarships annually. The purpose of these scholarships is to attract, recognize and reward outstanding students. Scholarships may be awarded based on financial need and/or academic merit.

Scholarships are available to students who are currently enrolled or pre-registered in credit or non-credit programs. A student is eligible to receive up to two scholarships per academic year. (July 1 – June 30) The awarding of the scholarships is given solely at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee.

The Scholarship Committee has sole discretion in the recommendation of scholarship awards or declines, which may be based on:

  1. Having equally qualified candidates who have not been awarded a scholarship within the past calendar or academic year.

  2. Quality and content of essay.

  3. Level of Grade point average.

  4. An omitted instructor recommendation.

  5. No validation or original statements and signatures from volunteer/organization representatives.

  6. Missing, incomplete, or unsigned documentation.

  7. Missing the Scholarship deadline.

  8. Scholarship Fund limitations.

Georgia Piedmont Technical College Foundation Scholarships

Paul M. Starnes Scholarship (Application Deadline: August 8, 2016 (Fall), December 08, 2016 (Spring), May 03, 2017 (Summer))
The Paul M. Starnes Scholarship is awarded to first year students who have completed at least 12 credit hours. (Transfer credits not included). This scholarship is awarded up to $500 credit to the student’s account at the GPTC Bookstore. Applicants must have a cumulative 2.5 minimum grade point average or higher. Applicants must have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours at GPTC, must be registered for 12 credit hours for the next semester, and provide proof of registration.

GPTC Achievement Scholarship (Application Deadline: August 8, 2016 (Fall)
The GPTC Achievement Scholarship is awarded to students who have completed 50% of the required Program of Study credit hours. The scholarship is awarded as a $200 credit to the student’s account at the GPTC Bookstore. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher. Applicants must be enrolled in a technical certificate of credit (TCC), diploma or degree program of study. Applicants must show proof of registration for the next semester (12 credit hours or more).

The Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Student Scholarship Fund (Application Deadline: August 8, 2016 (Fall), December 08, 2016 (Spring)
The Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Student Scholarship is in support of Newton County, GA residents at Georgia Piedmont Technical College pursuing their education goals at any level (certificate, Diploma and or Associates Degree). Students must submit a signed application, provide 2 recommendations from a faculty member and a non-family individual, and be a full-time student.

DeKalb Medical Center Foundation Scholarship (Application Deadline: August 8, 2016 (Fall)
The DeKalb Medical Foundation Scholarship is awarded to students who are currently enrolled in a healthcare program.  The scholarship is awarded as a $250 credit to the student’s account at the GPTC Bookstore.  Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.7 or higher. Applicants must be currently enrolled in a technical certificate of credit (TCC), diploma or degree in the healthcare program. Applicants must show proof of registration for the next semester (12 credit hours or more).

BB&T Financial Literacy Scholarship (Application Deadline August 8, 2016 (Fall)
The BB&T Financial Literacy Scholarship Fund is a fund set up to assist students with tuition, fees, textbooks, uniforms, tools, public transportation or other hardship needs. Students will be selected based on documented financial need. This scholarship can be awarded to students who have completed a full semester of course work towards a degree program or to incoming freshman on a case by case basis. The scholarship is awarded as a $100 - $500 credit to the student’s account.  Please check with the Registrar to be sure you are counting all applicable credit hours.  Do not count credit hours for courses not specific to your Program of Study listed on your transcript.  Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

The Joan D. Lewis Single Parent Memorial Scholarship (Fall Semester); Application Deadline August 8, 2016
The Joan D. Lewis Single Parent Memorial Scholarship is awarded to single parents who display academic excellence while pursuing a technical education in the Early Childhood Care and Education Program. The scholarship is awarded as a $500 check made payable to a verifiable childcare facility, or as a GPTC Bookstore credit in student’s name/account in order to assist with the high cost of instructional books or other educational supplies. As a full-time student, applicant must have completed at least 18 credit hours at GPTC, and be registered for 12 credit hours or more for the next semester. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.50 or greater, and present a copy of their current unofficial GPTC transcript for verification.

The Joan D. Lewis Single Parent Memorial ScholarshipApplication Deadline: August 8, 2016 (Fall), December 08, 2016 (Spring), May 03, 2017 (Summer)
The Joan D. Lewis Single Parent Memorial Scholarship is awarded to single parents who display academic excellence while pursuing a technical education in the Certified Nurse Assistant program (CAN) or Licensed Practical Nurse program (LPN). The scholarship is awarded as a $500 check made payable to a verifiable childcare facility, or as a GPTC Bookstore credit in student’s name/account in order to assist with the high cost of instructional books or other educational supplies. As a full-time student, applicant must have completed at least 18 credit hours at GPTC, and be registered for 12 credit hours or more for the next semester. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.50 or greater, and present a copy of their current unofficial GPTC transcript for verification.

Vanessa L. Rush Memorial Scholarship Application Deadline August 8, 2016 (Fall)
The family and friends of Vanessa Lee Rush established a scholarship in honor of her memory, and in appreciation of her commitment to advocate through various activities supporting the development of resources, projects and programs for microenterprise development, family housing and financial sustainability, civic engagement, community empowerment and leadership development. One $500.00 scholarship will be awarded each year, as funds permit. This scholarship will be awarded primarily as a check to the student in the degree or diploma program in the following areas: Business Management or Business Administrative Technology. Applicants must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher. Applicants must show proof of registration for the next semester (12 credit hours or more) and have at least 12 credit hours at GPTC

The 5 Seasons and Partner Scholarship Application Deadline August 8, 2016 (Fall)
The 5 Seasons and Partner Scholarship is awarded to a Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) or building Automation student. The student must be:

  • A native (born) outside of the USA
  • Have at least 8 credit hours
  • A registered as a current student
  • Applicant must provide an unofficial copy of transcript
  • Must provide a typed essay of no more than 500 words that explain why the applicant should be considered for this scholarship.

Spearman Ovbije International Leadership (SOIL) Scholarship (Application Deadline August 8, 2016) (Fall), December 08, 2016 (Spring)
The SOIL Scholarship will be presented to two (2) students each fall and spring semesters with a $250 scholarship to assist with tuition or books. Applicants must:

  • Registered as a student in good standing pursuing a degree or diploma at GPTC
  • Applicants must have completed at least 8 credit hours and registered for 8 credit hours for the upcoming semester
  • Applicants must submit an essay of 500 words that explain why the applicant would like to be considered for this scholarship and how this scholarship will help him / her financially and career wise
  •  Student must have at least a 3.0 grade point average

The Broadcast Engineering Technology Specialization Scholarship (BETS) (Application Deadline August 8, 2016) (Fall), December 08, 2016 (Spring)
The BETS Scholarship is for students in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology Degree Program. Applicants must be:

  • A currently enrolled student.
  • Have at least 8 credit hours at GPTC
  • Students must submit a one page essay describing their need for this scholarship and a description of their education and career goals
  • Applicant have a grade point average of 3.0 or greater
  • Students must present an unofficial copy of their GPTC transcript
  • Applicant must have successfully completed the ECET 101 Circuit Analysis I course with a grade of B or better

C. Hamilton Scholarship (Application Deadline August 8, 2016) (Fall), December 08, 2016 (Spring)
The Christine Harden Hamilton Scholarship was established to support the Student Members of SkillsUSA at Georgia Piedmont Technical College. It is awarded to students who demonstrate excellence in the classroom, student activities or in the community. Edibility requires:

  • Applicant must be registered as a current, full-time student in good standing
  • Must be pursuing a degree or diploma at GPTC
  • Must be a member of SkillsUSA and have competed at the State and National level
  • Applicant must have 12 credit hours or more for the next semester at any GPTC Campus
  • Applicant must submit a one-page essay describing their need for this scholarship or present a written and signed recommendation from an instructor, volunteer organizer or clergy
  • Student must have a grade point average for 2.5 or greater and present a copy of their current unofficial GPTC transcript for verification

Hardship Funds

Dr. Tanya Gorman Emergency & Hardship Fund
Dr. Tanya Gorman Student Student Emergency & Hardship Fund to assist students with tuition, fees, textbooks, uniforms, tools, public transportation or other hardship needs. Students will be selected based on documented financial need.

Merancas Foundation Emergency & Hardship Fund
Student Emergency Scholarship fund to assist students with tuition, fees, textbooks, uniforms, tools, public transportation or other hardship needs.  Students will be selected based on documented financial need.  This fund is an anchor of support through an emergency hardship scholarship to students with dire financial needs.

United Way Financial Empowerment Services (FES) Cash Assistance Program
The FES was established to help support students experiencing financial hardships, which may adversely affect their ability to graduate. Students who experience financial hardships within two semesters of graduation or certificate completion are eligible to receive up to $1807 to apply towards tuition, books, supplies, fees, transportation. Students must submit a completed hardship application, verify financial hardship for tuition, books and fees, have a GPA of at least 2.0 or higher, be in good standing with the college, graduate within 1-2 semester of receiving funds and complete financial literacy training upon approval.
